College Hockey: This Week In The NCHA and MCHA: Jan. 19 2007
USCH – Jan 19, 2007
19 & 20 — Finlandia (10-5-0) @ Marian (5-8-2) seriesMany are saying Finlandia is the best team in the MCHA despite the fact they just split a tough series with MSE. Marian’s overall record doesn’t show they sit only one spot behind Finlandia in the MCHA standings and the Sabres are chomping at the bit to close the gap. The two split their earlier season series but that was back in November and both feel they have improved. I say: Finlandia sweep; Michael says: SplitSat… Norbert remains the third ranked team in the nation with UW-River Falls UW-Stout and UW-Superior once again checking in at fourth fifth and seventh respectively. Despite splitting a series with conference foe Finlandia MSE remains the only MCHA team to receive votes still landing a few spots out of the top 15. With conference play finally resuming in the NCHA it’s safe to say the season has officially hit the home stretch. This week I’ll break down what was a competitive week in the MCHA before getting out the crystal ball in attempt to forecast what will be a wild final four weeks in the NCHA. Additionally I’ll take a look at one player who excels not only on the ice but in life as well. MSE’s Soik Does It AllBy now most people are familiar with MSE forward Brian Soik’s exploits on the ice.

And it could have done withoutthe gloopy sentimentality that country music folk seem unable to resistrepeatedly urging us to believe what a “verrspeshl” project it had all been. That said there was some terrific music impeccably stage-managed to get thevarious impromptu line-ups on and off with the minimum of fuss. If thehighlight was Chapman’s extraordinary blues arrangement of the hymn fromSibelius’s Finlandia it was only because it was so different. The other tunes benefited from the special arrangements and specialmusicians who were playing them but they were more what one expects at thistime of year. As a taster of things to come though — just about everyone hasgigs of their own coming up — it was distinctly appetising. Box office: 0141-353 8000.

Meet the new WCRB
wickedlocal.com – Jan 24, 2007
n a recent Sunday afternoon music included Mozart’s “Symphony no. 34” and Beethoven’s “Pathetique Sonata” as well as the lesser-known “Scherzo Capriccio” by Dvorak and the Grieg Piano Concerto. Throughout the past week programming choices ranged from the often-heard “Hebrides verture” by Mendelssohn and Sibelius’ “Finlandia” as well as the rarely heard “Meditation” by Massenet. Edwards also says that the station will continue its tradition of broadcasting live BS and Pops concerts. “And we’re in conversation now with Keith Lockhart to bring in a daily feature on our morning program with Laura Carlo. ” As for WCRB’s conservative mix of music that has annoyed and even alienated classical purists Edwards points out that classical music radio faces a grim economic reality. “Going back 10 or 20 years ago WCRB was an incredibly prestigious radio station in this market and indeed was a shining light for commercial classical radio all over the country” says Edwards.

Greeted quickly by one of the two bartenders we inquired about a large glass jar filled with slices of pineapple soaking in a clear liquid sitting at the end of bar. A pineapple — the traditional symbol of hospitality — and vodka (we were hoping) was a welcoming sign for sure. The bartender explained it was a house special of pineapple and Finlandia vodka. She offered two drink suggestions: the pineapple infused vodka served straight over ice with a splash of cranberry or a Cosmopolitan made with the pineapple-infusion. We went with her suggestions. Both drinks arrived quickly ($5. 50 each) garnished with large chunks of sweet juicy pineapple.
