Even Grieg dreaded playing it and he wrote it. She has a definite future as a musician. What’ll it be Margit? Science or music?The rest of the program was mostly lovely too: Grieg’s Peer Gynt first suite and the rest all Sibelius — Karelia and Finlandia. But nothing was lovelier than The Swan of Tuonela with that mythic image of a swan placidly floating on the fast-moving waters of the kingdom of death from Finnish legend. The guest was the VS’s oboist and English horn player Beth rson a wonderful musician. She played with evocative gravity long controlled lines mystery and delicate intensity which was intact and completely unbroken. It seems to have caught the imagination of the orchestral players too because their response was acute with especially nice playing from the string principals cellist Rosanna Butterfield violinist Yena Lee and violist Newsha Khalaj.
