Patrick’s Day celebrations. However that doesn’t matter to city residents. Every March 16 for the last 26 years they have gone out to celebrate St. Urho with a parade and party at the Finlandia Club. Saturday afternoon the hall was decked out in purple and green (official colours of St. Urho’s Day) and filled with revellers enjoying Finnish specialties like kalamojakka (fish stew) as they waited to start the parade. And the outfits were as eclectic as the crowd itself: some were content to accessorize with just a low-key button or a discreet plastic grasshopper attached to a fur hat while others went full-on.

The 26th annual St. Urho’s Day celebration was marked by the city’s Finnish community. The story goes that the fictional character used a huge rake to drive all the grasshoppers out the vineyards of Finland and over 100 people took part in the parade this year which originates and ends at the Finlandia Club on Bay Street. An new feature was a character in costume– Jari Lahtinen as the big bad grasshopper. rganizers had considered ending the St. Urho’s Day party after last year’s 25th anniversary event but gave in to public demand and the tongue-in-cheek celebration will continue for a while longer.
