Adrian finally scored the game winner 1:01 into the third as Sam Kuzyk lit the lamp to put the Bulldogs up 4-1. Soik scored again to pull the Raiders within two and forward Matt Fastelin would tally late for MSE but it wasn?t enough as Adrian recorded the 5-3 victory to advance to Sunday?s final. The second semifinal between Marian and Finlandia turned out to be as entertaining and even on the ice as it was on paper. In perhaps one of the greatest games anyone has seen all season it had everything. Both teams hit a post in the opening 45 seconds and the entire game was rife with physical play scoring chances quality goaltending and special teams opportunities. Finlandia would jump out to a 1-0 lead midway through the first on a goal Mike Parks but Marian?s James Goodfellow would tally a power-play marker late in the frame and not surprisingly the period would end 1-1. The second period would see no scoring but it may have been the turning point in the contest… In perhaps one of the greatest games anyone has seen all season it had everything. Despite including a 1:48 of 5-on-3 advantage Marian was unable to capitalize and would end up taking a penalty of its own after the period had ended. Finlandia took advantage.

9 goals per contest which lies in stark contrast to the 3. 5 per game they have averaged over the rest of the season. Though they are playing well this weekend?s match-up with Finlandia will be a tough row to hoe as the Lions are always formidable at home. Lawrence did defeat Finlandia at home both this season and last but was swept the last time they made a trip to Hancock. ?bviously they are a very talented team and they have a ton of experience? said Szkodzinski. ?Also with this being their last home weekend you have to expect their seniors to be coming out with a lot of fire and that?s something we are going to have to contain — especially Friday night. ? He added ?I think we?ve started to develop a good rivalry with Finlandia and they are exciting games each time we play them… 5 per game they have averaged over the rest of the season. It?s not that the Bulldogs might not be one of the top four teams in the region but rather that it is hard to justify that position based on the numbers alone. The first is due to fact the Bulldogs? have not played a West Region ranked team so they lose the comparison to anyone with at least a tie against a ranked team. The second is due to the MCHA?s relatively poor showing in non-conference action. Perhaps unfair to the MCHA those realties put a team like Adrian in a bind as it enters a host of individual comparisons at a built in 2-0 disadvantage. Without playing any MIAC or NCHA teams head-to-head it becomes extremely difficult for them to beat out teams like River Falls Stout Superior Hamline Bethel Stevens Point etc… Despite the fact Lawrence controlled its own destiny and a Saturday win would have solidified hosting rights for the Vikings head coach Mike Szkodzinski wasn?t as discouraged as some might guess. ?I think we definitely gave away an opportunity to get home ice? he said. ?However I?m proud of the effort the guys put forth at Finlandia. I thought we played extremely hard. Both teams competed as hard as I?ve seen this season and it was a good tuneup for what could happen in the next couple of weeks here. ? He added ?I think our team showed a lot of grit showed a lot of hunger showed a lot of desire. It just so happened Finlandia capitalized more on the chances on Saturday and we did on Friday.

Adrian’s 9-1 14-2 sweep of Crookston was enough to slide the Bulldogs up two spots to no. 13 while Marian’s road split at Finlandia cost it the lone vote it garnered last week. It should only be a few weeks until the NCAA Regional Rankings emerge and we can begin to follow the NCAA tournament hopes of some of the region’s elites. For the time being however conference play it shall be. MCHA With eight games remaining in the MCHA regular season there will be plenty to follow in the weeks to come. For now though let’s take a look back at the MCHA and where it stands in its first season with eight teams… This despite the fact that these same critics are more often than not the same people who have never seen a MCHA game. But with perception greatly influencing reality it would certainly do the league good to kick it up a notch against teams from other leagues. Along with MSE Finlandia has fared respectable well in non-conference play and has defeated St. laf Superior and Augsburg over the past two seasons. Still in that span the Lions are only 3-5-2 against out of conference opponents. “bviously we didn’t do as well as we’d like to” said Lions head coach Joe Burcar. “I think our league is continuing to improve though and we are slowly closing the gap on the MIAC and NCHA.
