‘DeGrazia’ more Ettore than Ted
Arizona Daily Wildcat
The museum hosted a reception to celebrate DeGrazia’s 100th birthday. Tucson artist Ettore “Ted” DeGrazia (1909-1982) may be most recognized today for painting faceless Native American children à la Precious Moments but the new exhibit “DeGrazia: A Modernist Perspective” at the Tucson Museum of Art reminds us that DeGrazia’s life and oeuvre were not limited to UNICEF holiday cards. “Sibelius Finlandia pus 26″ circa 1940s is an oil painting on canvas that was part of DeGrazia’s Master’s thesis – done at the UA – in which he explored the relationship between classical music and art. The piece’s dramatic colors match the dramatic sounds of “Finlandia p. 26″ by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. The painting was originally unveiled at the Arizona Daily Star building in 1945 while a Victrola phonograph played “Finlandia p.

Chicago Daily Herald
Included are two of the most familiar pieces in the 19th century romantic repertoire Jean Sibelius’ “Finlandia” and Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A Minor joined by the amazing World War I-era Symphony No. Thus Finland Norway and Denmark are represented in this tour through Scandinavia long one of the world’s creative bastions of classical music. Pianist Terrence Wilson New York-born and trained (the Juilliard School of Music) is this weekend’s soloist for the only concerto composed during Grieg’s long career (he wrote it when he was only 25). ne of the “warhorses” of the romantic concerto repertoire in Friday’s weekend-opening concert Wilson gave Grieg’s famous descending opening chords their proper dramatic emphasis but then brought a total sense of serenity to the main lyric theme of the first movement as well as the middle-movement’s adagio.
Kjell Westö novel translated into Spanish
Helsingin Sanomat
The book which won the 2006 Finlandia Prize was translated from the Swedish-language original by Caterina Pascual Söderbaum and is published by Miscelánea. A lengthy article on Westö was printed in the daily La Vanguardia on June 17th. La Vanguardia which is published in Barcelona is one of the most widely-read newspapers in Spain. In the article Westö notes for example that modern Finland is moving towards a more Mediterranean way of life which is lessening the country’s characteristically Lutheran spirit. A few volumes of Finnish literature are translated into Spanish each year.
