Martial Law in Microcosm:The Beating of Pastor Steven Anderson

The pitiful screams of the unresisting Baptist pastor attest to the Taser’s barbarous effectiveness in that role. It’s interesting and appropriate that the last part of the video is set to the strains of the Christian hymn Be Still My Soul which takes its melody from Finlandia composed by the heroic Jan Sibelius. At once patriotic and proudly subversive the Finlandia Hymn was a protest against the political repression of the Finns by the Russian Empire. We’ve clearly reached the point at which any authentic American patriot is going to be treated as a subversive by the armed enforcers of Washington’s empire. ___*No not every police officer does this kind of thing. Many of my acquaintance are just as alarmed as I am over the growing militarization of law enforcement and the pathological arrogance of the rising crop of uniformed enforcers.

This NSIC schedule is generally favorable in terms of travel for the Beavers. The longest stretch on the road is three games: two on the road at Winona State and Upper Iowa which is followed by the game against Northern Michigan. Bemidji State will play four of the final six games of the season on the road but those four are divided with the game against Finlandia and the final regular season home game against Winona State on Feb.

Sports commentator Archie MacPherson on the otherhand was well-prepared and played it straight down thepark with a judicious number of quips. The critical element was that the RSN divided the show. They invited Dougie MacLean in to do two sets so the show was evenly split with the RSN and its chorus performing bullet-proof crowd-pleasers Finlandia Va Pensiero Grand March from Aida Marche Slave and others moderately played and sung for conductor Grant Llewellyn. MacLean a consummate performer utterly laid-back with a sound system that worked to perfection and his songs clothed in simple but gorgeous orchestral accompaniments written by Paul Bateman and the late KevinMacRae was the complete star. He did nothing unexpected and his selections were from the Dougie MacLean songbook but every song Ready for the Storm Ca’ the Yowes Broken Wings Heiland Harry Green Grow the Rashes and of course his “lovable monster” Caledonia emerged as haunting and penetrating as ever. © All rights reserved.
