After School Project Exploring Scandinavian Cultural Identity Receives Grant

PRESS RELEASE
July 31, 2009

AFTER SCHOOL PROJECT EXPLORING SCANDINAVIAN CULTURAL IDENTITY RECEIVES GRANT

Scandinavian Stories, a New York-based after school project exploring and documenting Scandinavian cultural identity in a globalized world, has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation.

“We are delighted by the news and very grateful to the Barbro Osher Foundation. The grant covers a little less than a third of the costs for the project, so this fall we will continue our work of raising funds”, says Martina Högberg, who together with Melinda Martino is behind Scandinavian Stories. As Swedes, New Yorkers, and immigrants themselves, questions of cultural identity have long been of personal interest to them and have inspired them to launch the project.

Through digital storytelling workshops with children and youth aged 9-15 of Scandinavian heritage, or with connections to Scandinavia, they aim to explore Scandinavian cultural identity in the globalized 21st century. Over 10 weeks in the spring of 2010, the workshop participants will discuss and investigate issues related to heritage, identity, and migration and in the process produce digital stories – short films combining different media – documenting what Scandinavian cultural identity can look like in today’s globalized world. Martina Högberg and Melinda Martino hope that the personal stories shared by the participants will shed light on the connections between understanding one’s individual cultural identity and the ability to experience a sense of global citizenship. The stories will be spread to a broad audience though web, TV, radio, print and public screenings.

Scandinavian Stories will be open for enrollment this fall. The venue of Scandinavian Stories is the Halldór Laxness Library at Scandinavia House, the headquarters of The American-Scandinavian Foundation.

The Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation supports Swedish-related cultural and educational projects in the U.S. and Sweden.
