Is there a campus historian who can verify this more amusing tale of the birth of the hymn?I was told the story soon after I came to Chico. A group of students wrote the words for a one-verse hymn but they were stumped by needing music. Someone suggested the tune to “Finlandia” by Jean Sibelius. Everyone was happy with this idea and they rewrote the lyrics to go with the well-known melody. Just one problem: Jean Sibelius was alive and well in Finland. What to do? Write and ask him. A letter was composed and sent off to the famous composer asking permission to use the tune and what would be the fee charged for this use?Sibelius responded to their letter with a gracious one of his own giving his cordial approval for using “Finlandia” in the college hymn.

Director Markku Lahti of the Alvar Aalto Foundation believes that the effect has been a deliberate one. It is a well-known fact that architect Alvar Aalto liked to hide similar visual jests in some of the buildings he designed. The optical illusion came to public attention when a reader asked in Sunday’s Helsingin Sanomat whether or not such a phenomenon was a coincidence.

It’s just difficult to have sympathy for any nation that can concoct a flavor as profoundly odd as the one that wafts from a glass of Finlandia Tangerine Fusion. The first whiff comes across as an orange scratch-and-sniff circa 1985 the kind of concentrated faux-citrus flavor that seems more appropriate these days for infomercial cleaning solutions or truck stop air fresheners. But wait Finlandia uses only natural flavors in its Tangerine Fusion. f course when they say natural flavors they’re likely talking about atoms stripped from plants and recombined by chemists in a lab not a few pounds of tangerine run through a food processor. With the first sip of the vodka I immediately peg the flavor thanks to a long childhood of aches and pains: Finlandia Tangerine Fusion tastes like chewable Bayer baby aspirin.

In the 1980s it seemed every other tourist in Helsinki was an architect there to marvel at the modern buildings. Today Helsinki’s once-striking Finlandia Hall by Alvar Aalto is only striking out. I’ve always listed the Kon-Tiki Museum in slo as a must-see. It was one when it captured the imagination of would-be sea adventurers a generation ago. Today the museum seems to be going the way of the log boat. I have also realized that I need to be careful not to romanticize the nobility and intelligence of a people I’m predisposed to be impressed by.

The Sudbury Finnish Rest Home Society Inc. which operates the Finlandia Village complex is seeking federal and provincial housing subsidies for the proposed development. The proposed complex would cater to a growing demographic — seniors who need affordable housing as well as support services to help live with a degree of independence said Brian Koivu chairman of the Finnish Rest Home Society’s board of directors. The group is among several private and non-profit organizations that have indicated an interest in affordable housing grants being offered by the federal and provincial governments.

AFTER SCHOOL PROJECT EXPLORING SCANDINAVIAN CULTURAL IDENTITY RECEIVES GRANT

Scandinavian Stories, a New York-based after school project exploring and documenting Scandinavian cultural identity in a globalized world, has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation.

“We are delighted by the news and very grateful to the Barbro Osher Foundation. The grant covers a little less than a third of the costs for the project, so this fall we will continue our work of raising funds”, says Martina Högberg, who together with Melinda Martino is behind Scandinavian Stories. As Swedes, New Yorkers, and immigrants themselves, questions of cultural identity have long been of personal interest to them and have inspired them to launch the project.

Through digital storytelling workshops with children and youth aged 9-15 of Scandinavian heritage, or with connections to Scandinavia, they aim to explore Scandinavian cultural identity in the globalized 21st century. Over 10 weeks in the spring of 2010, the workshop participants will discuss and investigate issues related to heritage, identity, and migration and in the process produce digital stories – short films combining different media – documenting what Scandinavian cultural identity can look like in today’s globalized world. Martina Högberg and Melinda Martino hope that the personal stories shared by the participants will shed light on the connections between understanding one’s individual cultural identity and the ability to experience a sense of global citizenship. The stories will be spread to a broad audience though web, TV, radio, print and public screenings.

Scandinavian Stories will be open for enrollment this fall. The venue of Scandinavian Stories is the Halldór Laxness Library at Scandinavia House, the headquarters of The American-Scandinavian Foundation.

The Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation supports Swedish-related cultural and educational projects in the U.S. and Sweden.
