Maybe it is a myth? Is there a campus historian who can verify this more amusing tale of the birth of the hymn?I was told the story soon after I came to Chico. A group of students wrote the words for a one-verse hymn but they were stumped by needing music. Someone suggested the tune to “Finlandia” by Jean Sibelius. Everyone was happy with this idea and they rewrote the lyrics to go with the well-known melody. Just one problem: Jean Sibelius was alive and well in Finland. What to do? Write and ask him. A letter was composed and sent off to the famous composer asking permission to use the tune and what would be the fee charged for this use?Sibelius responded to their letter with a gracious one of his own giving his cordial approval for using “Finlandia” in the college hymn.

UW-shkosh which has reeled off 24 consecutive winning seasons and been a participant in 11 NCAA Division III postseason tournaments received three first-place votes in the WIAC survey. UW-Platteville is picked to finish second in the league’s championship race UW-Whitewater third UW-Superior fourth and Finlandia University fifth. UW-Platteville and UW-Whitewater both collected one first-place vote. UW-shkosh posted an 11-5-2 record last season including a 1-0 victory over UW-Superior a 1-0 double overtime win over UW-Platteville and a scoreless double overtime tie with UW-Whitewater. Director Markku Lahti of the Alvar Aalto Foundation believes that the effect has been a deliberate one. No one even talks about these places anymore. In the 1980s it seemed every other tourist in Helsinki was an architect there to marvel at the modern buildings. Today Helsinki’s once-striking Finlandia Hall by Alvar Aalto is only striking out. I’ve always listed the Kon-Tiki Museum in slo as a must-see. It was one when it captured the imagination of would-be sea adventurers a generation ago. Today the museum seems to be going the way of the log boat. I have also realized that I need to be careful not to romanticize the nobility and intelligence of a people I’m predisposed to be impressed by.
